About The Study
Families in the SurgeryPal study would access an online program before and after surgery. Families would also complete online surveys once before surgery and 3 times after surgery.
Taking part in the study is voluntary
All study tasks are done online
There are no costs to participate in the study
Families will be compensated up to $580 if all study assessments are completed
Study length is about 7-11 months
Surgery can be a stressful time for teens and their families.
Learning skills may help reduce pain and stress around surgery
Can I join the SurgeryPal study?
You can join if you:
are 12-18 years old
are having spinal fusion surgery
have access to the internet
are able to read and speak English

Procedures
If you decide to join the study, you would be randomly selected to receive 1 of 2 online programs to prepare for your surgery and recovery.
Assessments
4 online study assessments with surveys: once before surgery and 3 times after surgery

Teen Total: $340
Parent Total: $240
Medication
This study does not involve any medication(s). Please use medications as prescribed by your health care provider.

Helpful Definitions
Randomization - Means you will be assigned to receive 1 of 2 online programs pre- and post-surgery by chance, like flipping a coin. Everyone has the same chance of being randomized to each of the programs. This is the best way to figure out which intervention works better.
